OPENING NIGHT OF OKTOBERFEST CONTINUES THE IMPRESSIVE SEASON FOR UP AND COMING RACER FREDRICKSON

We have witnessed many new faces to the racing scene start their racing careers with humble beginnings and become legendary drivers with such amazing skill and talent that they will never be forgotten. Names like Trickle, Shear, Reffner, Hanley and Majeski have proven to be very gifted race car drivers with many big race wins, track championships, and even series championships. Mark Martin is another with a great short track and NASCAR career you can read all about in his new autobiography “Never Lift”. Dan Fredrickson has proven to be a very impressive driver, especially when it comes to the Oktoberfest Race Weekend. Now his young son Ty is following in his tire tracks and continuing the Fredrickson racing legacy. Ty claimed a Dick Trickle 99 title in 2024, and on the opening night of the 57th Oktoberfest at the LaCrosse Speedway Fredrickson added a Super Late Model ‘Futures’ win to his ever growing and expanding racing resume.

Brandon Sischo (Stratford, WI) got a bit sideways as the green flag fell on the Super Late Model ‘Futures’ feature, which allowed Bryce Miller (Columbus, WI) to surge into the lead. Miller would pull away from the pack, but soon would have to deal with Nick Egan (Slinger, WI). Ty Fredrickson, the hottest young racer in the Midwest, needed just lap nine to go from fourth to second at the expense of both Jerad deBoer (Sherry, WI) and Egan. Fredrickson’s race car was running on rails as he quickly caught and passed Miller to settle into the lead after the crossed flags were displayed. deBoer was up to the challenge of keeping a tight hold on second over Penn Sauter (DeForest, WI), but there would be no catching Fredrickson as he captured another Oktoberfest trophy and banner to add to the family’s racing room. After the race Fredrickson said “We barely changed anything on the race car after testing, and we have been bad fast no matter where we go.”

Big time ASA Midwest Tour feature winners Justin Mondeik (Gleason, WI) and Paul Shafer, Jr. (Portage, IN) fought hard for the lead at the start of the 22-lap Super Late Model Knights feature. Shafer, Jr. got a better run on the outside of Mondeik to take charge of the race on lap two. Two-time ASA Midwest Tour champion Gabe Sommers (Plover, WI) moved into third by lap ten and began to slowly reel in Mondeik in the hopes of making a late charge at Shafer, Jr. Sommers surged into second with seven laps remaining, but had a major mountain to climb to make up any ground on Shafer, Jr. This year’s Tony Bettenhausen Memorial winner added his name to the list of prestigious Super Late Model Knights winners as Shafer, Jr. picked up his first ever Oktoberfest trophy and banner. After the race Shafer, Jr. said “I knew earlier today we had a good race car, and it would help us continue one of our strongest seasons ever.”

We kicked off the Tom Reffner 88 with the first 22-lap main event for the LaCrosse Late Models. Mike Litchfeld (Pardeeville, WI) bided his time for the first couple laps before powering under Michael Beamish (Eagan, MN) to move into the lead. Jackson Lewis (Sun Prairie, WI) tried to get under Litchfeld a lap later, but the first-time LaCrosse feature winner this season opened up a few car lengths on the young lion. Lewis would not give up on fighting for first with Litchfeld, even with Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) following their tire tracks. At halfway two-time Chase champion Nick Clements (West Salem, WI) joined the fight for first as the battle for the win got a bit more intense. Lewis thought a little bump would give him the lead with three laps remaining, but Litchfeld maintained his composure and drove off with his first career Oktoberfest feature victory. After the race Litchfeld said “Without spotters to help us race, I made a metal mistake and gave Jackson (Lewis) a chance to steal the win from me.”

Nick Barstad (Prior Lake, MN) used the outside lane to drive around Michael Haggar (Hanover, MN) to lead the early laps of second LaCrosse Late Model 22-lap Oktoberfest feature. Contact with another race car sent Steve Anderson, Jr. (Farmington, MN) into the spin cycle on lap four, but he was quickly able to rejoin the race. Barstad opened up a hefty lead on the restart as Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) began to look underneath Haggar. Bendzick got that opportunity to take over the runner-up spot on lap five and tried to set his sights on Barstad. Soon both drivers would have to contend with championship rivals Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) and Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI). The separation on the track between those two mirrored the six-point difference between them with just two features left to run. Goede began to peek under Bendzick, but they touched in turn three resulting in a spin into the wall for Bendzick. Officials sent Goede to the trunk for the restart, while Barstad had to deal with Holzhausen in the final three-lap showdown. Tom Luethe (West Salem, WI) was cool under pressure as he held onto second despite a ton of pressure from Holzhausen. Barstad checked out on that battle to claim a second Oktoberfest feature win in three years. After the race Barstad said “

The 20 lap feature finale for the LaCrosse Sportsmen saw Dillon Sellner (Randolph, MN) surge past Eric Montour (Rosemount, MN) to lead the early laps of the race. While Sellner tried to pull away to a sizable lead, Adam Cartwright (Rockton, IL) began to get a little bit bigger in Sellner’s mirrors with each passing lap. After receiving the crossed flags, Sellner began to open his lead back up as Cody Clubb (Coal City, IL) began to look for a way around Cartwright to claim second. Dave Edwards (Salem, WI) began to make a late race as he shot around both Clubb and Cartwright to move into second with two laps left to run. It was too little too late as Sellner took an Oktoberfest feature win back to the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’. A respectable 8th place effort would net Charles Vian, Jr. the track championship and the Chase title to go along with his Dash crown.

Ben Kohlmeier powered around Zach Liebsch to lead the start of the LaCrosse Hornet feature. Kohlmeier pulled out to a sizable advantage. Fresh off his Street Stock feature, Zach Liebsch kept hounding Kohlmeier to find a way around him for an Oktoberfest feature triumph. Kohlmeier maintained the top spot while having to fend off Liebsch, fellow Chase contender Joey Johnson III and enduro veteran Eric Breitenfeldt. Johnson was relentless in his pursuit of Kohlmeier, but contact between the two with two laps remaining allowed Kohlmeier to pull away with the Oktoberfest trophy and a Chase Championship. A strong 5th place effort locked up a third track championship in seven years for Jimmy Bjorkman.

Our first feature of the 57th running of Oktoberfest was for the Street Stocks. A daring low move under both Jeff Graf and Dakota Clauson saw Alivia Moore power to the front of the pack at the end of the first lap. It was hard not to see the bright orange machine of Kaleb Hardy, who stuck right behind Moore for much of the race in the hopes he got that golden opportunity to take the lead. Throw in the lapped machine of Tim Murphy, Sr. and a yellow flag with six laps to go. All of that would not deter Moore from adding a Street Stock feature win to her Six Shooter and HSRA features from this season. History made by Moore with feature wins in all three six-cylinder classes in the same season. Despite being DQ’ed in post-race inspection, Zach Liebsch had a large enough of a points advantage to claim the season points championship.

We wrap up the first night of Oktoberfest with the traditional Double-O Race. This is a 12-lap race alternating between the big 5/8-mile track and the smaller 1/4-mile ‘action track’. Our version of a figure 8 race, with turn four of the 1/4-mile and the start/finish line of the front straight of the main track being the middle of the ‘X’. There was major contact in turns three and four on the first lap, but that cleared up quickly. Adam Cartwright and Dave Edwards tangled at the ‘X’ on lap two, but they both righted their race cars and got back in the race. Bob Ford tangled with the tires on the 1/4-mile in turn two with five laps to go, but got out of that mess. Four-cylinder veteran Justin Schelitzche powered by Edwards with four laps to go. Edwards’ earlier contact would not allow him to battle for the win with Schelitzche as he added this race win to his many championships he has racked up.

Local racing is not done just yet as LaCrosse NASCAR Late Models have another pair of 20 lap features to run with a ton of title gold at the end of the rainbow on Friday, October 9. The season-long points title fight will be settled, along with the Chase Championship and the seventh edition of the Nuttleman Grain Cleaning Festmaster Championship. One of the most prestigious trophies drivers go for at the 57th Oktoberfest Race Weekend is to be forever known as the Dick Trickle 99 champion. The top guns in Super Late Model racing from all over the country look to add their names to the “who’s who” list of Trickle 99 winners. The Area Sportsmen will run the Rick Schermerhorn Memorial race, the fourth and final race of the inaugural Sportsmen Showdown Series. The top Sportsmen competitors throughout the Midwest will be out to claim an Oktoberfest title and be the first ever champion of this new traveling series Gates open at 3, the fight to be the speed demon of the speedway in qualifying revs to life at 3:20 and the wheel-to-wheel high speed on-track competition goes live at 5:30.
