The first half of the 57th Oktoberfest Race Weekend has produced a number of dramatic late race finishes and championship battles that went right down to the wire. As we enter the second half of the weekend at the LaCrosse Speedway, now we get down to the big name drivers competing for some important championship hardware and some very prestigious Oktoberfest feature wins. Saturday night’s racing action has been known as ‘Championship Saturday’, and it once again lived up to its billing. The Mid-Am Racing Series witnessed Cameron Priesler become a first-time feature winner and Daniel Calhoun joined a very impressive list of Mid-Am champions for the first time in his career. The Big 8 Late Model Series witnessed a great race-long battle that went to last year’s series champion Tim Sargent, while Michael Bilderback added to Bilderback Racing’s legacy with an unprecedented and historic sixth series championship.
The 48-lap season finale for the Big 8 Late Model Series saw Steve Bachman (Sparta, WI) power around Colton Morgan (Black Earth, WI) in turn four to take charge of the race. Jon Reynolds, Jr. (Loves Park, IL) spun in turn two after suffering a flat tire to slow the action on lap three. Yellow returned a lap later after Griffin McGrath (Cedar Rapids, IA) got slideways coming out of turn four after suffering a mechanical failure. The result of that problem sent McGrath into the turn one wall. While Bachman pulled away from the field, Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) battled hard with Zach Riddle (Oregon, WI) before shooting past ‘Showtime’ to take over second on lap five. It was still early in the race as Goede was in no hurry to go after Bachman for the lead. After yellow came out again for a spin by Brandon Laing (South Beloit, IL) on lap 12, Goede poked his nose under Bachman entering turn one and shot right by him to settle into the lead. Defending series champion Randy Sargent (South Beloit, IL) drove around Bachman a lap later to claim second and quickly drive right up behind Goede. Sargent kept peeking to the inside as the two most recent Oktoberfest Big 8 race winners put on a whale of a battle for first. Bachman suddenly got his ‘second wind’ and began to close back up on the leaders. Goede got a better run out of the turns to maintain the lead over Sargent, while Bachman had the perfect seat to enjoy this back-and-forth battle. Contact between Goede and Sargent may have allowed to open a few car lengths as Sargent now had to contend with Bachman. Sargen regrouped and began to slowly close back up on Goede just after receiving the crossed flags. Sargent began again to sniff for an opening on the inside on Goede, but Goede was determined to fight back the repeated challenge of Sargent. As that fight continued, suddenly five-time series champion Jeremy Miller (Rockford, IL) turned the wick up even more on the pressure-packed battle for first. Sargent used a lapped car to play ‘pick and roll’ to finally get around Goede to claim first with 12 laps remaining. As Sargent was getting smaller in front of him, Bachman was looming larger in Goede’s mirrors. Bachman would not let up on trying to wrestle second away from Goede in the closing laps, but it was not to be. Sargent was long gone as he captured his second Oktoberfest Big 8 feature win in three years. A finish of eighth would wrap up history for Michael Bilderback as he becomes the championship winningest driver in Big 8 history with points crown number six.
Timmy Stewart (Gary, IN) powered around the outside of Ron Vandermier, Jr. (Sheridan, IL) to lead the opening circuit of the Mid-Am Racing Series feature. Rick Tackman, Jr. (Slinger, WI) lost control coming out of turn four and harmlessly tagged the inside wall to slow the action down on lap two. Stewart maintained a few car lengths lead on Vandermier, Jr., who was now dealing with Cameron Priesley (Braidwood, IL). Both would be joined by veteran Mid-Am driver Kevin Murphy (Manhattan, IL) and former champion Clay Curts (Monee, IL) as the fight over the runner-up position intensified. Stewart began to pull away from that pack, and at halfway Vandermier, Jr. began to leave the drivers fighting him over second to battle amongst themselves. Murphy was the first to break free from that pack as he dove to the inside to power his way up to third with ten laps remaining. With seven laps left to run, Murphy caught up to Vandermier, Jr. and tried to work the inside lane to take over second place. Vandermier, Jr. got loose in turn four coming to five to go and that allowed Murphy to move into second. Yellow flew with three laps to go after Curts lost it in turn four and tagged the outside wall. Murphy pushed the limits of racing when he tagged and turned Stewart in turn four, then he stopped at the start/finish line to tap his roof and admit the incident was his fault. Priesler tried to apply pressure to Stewart on the restart, then the two made contact on the front straight. The result sent Stewart to the high side and Priesler to his second career Mid-Am feature triumph. A 7th place run would be good enough to give Daniel Calhoun his first Mid-Am Racing Series championship.
Eugene Gregorich, Jr. (Amherst Junction, WI) shot past first-time starter Cael Slater (Tomah, WI) to lead the early going of the Midwest Truck Series feature. A good fight over second was taking place as Danielle Behn (Waupaca, WI), Scott Ciesielski (Amherst, WI) and Grant Greisbach (Concord, WI) battled to see who would be the one to challenge Gregorich, Jr. Griesbach was the first to make a move on lap 14 as he wrestled third away from Ciesielski. Behn was beginning to feel the heat from Griesbach as he peeked time after time to the inside, but Behn began to slowly pull away to keep a tight grip on the runner-up spot. Lapped traffic started to give Griesbach another chance to take over second from Behn, and he finally completed the pass to take over second with six laps remaining. Gregorich, Jr. showed he still has the drive to get the job done as he joined his son Eugene III as a Midwest Truck Series winner.
Josh Willhite shot past Keegan Benz to take the lead at the start of the Midwest Dash Series feature. Soon Willhite’s mirror would be full of both Mark Dewey and Mark English, who surged by Willhite for the lead at the end of lap three. English would now have to deal with veteran four-cylinder racer Kyle Stark, who dove to the inside in turns three and four and would finish lap four with the lead. As the senior Stark was pulling away from the pack, Karter Stark was hunting high and low for the moment to wrestle second away from English. Karter was unable to find a way past as English’s strong race car allowed him to keep a tight grip on the runner-up position. Soon the train that English was leading would grow to a four driver fight over second as both Mark Dewey and Tim Anderson ramped up the intensity of the fight. Karter Stark got alongside English and drove under him to claim second, but with only two laps left to run. Even with a rather large gap between them, it would be a father-son top two finish as Kyle Stark added another Oktoberfest trophy and banner to his racing room.
Ty Majeski surged to the top of Sucker Punch ASA Midwest Tour qualifying thanks to a strong lap of 18.598 seconds. While receiving his ‘Faster Than a Speeding Bullet’ award, Majeski was once again offered the Ultimate Challenge. If Ty started last in the 200 lap season finale and ended up in victory lane with his record sixth Oktoberfest championship, he would also pick up that bonus which has risen up to $12,500 at the time of this story. Bettenhausen Memorial winner Paul Shafer, Jr. got an opening coming to the white flag to shoot under former TUNDRA champion Riley Stenjem and win the Odd Dash. Casey Johnson drives away with a dominant win in the Even Dash, and may have vaulted over Penn Sauter in the title race. Sauter was nipped in post-qualifying inspection for being too light at the scales. For the rest of the field, their race was a positioning race to determine their starting order at the end of the lineup for the 200-lap Oktoberfest main event on Sunday. Luke Fenhaus tried to catch Mitch Haver over the final four laps, but it was a little too much ground to make up as Haver scored the win.
If you have enjoyed the dramatic highs and lows of the 13 different divisions that have competed at the 57th Oktoberfest Race Weekend after the first three days, Sunday’s finale will be a nail biting conclusion that will leave you on the ‘edge of your seat’. Drama will be nonstop in the final race of the year for the ASA Midwest Tour as five drivers will settle the closest title fight in series history in their 200 lap main event. Could the 2026 champion of the ASA Midwest Tour also become an Oktoberfest champion to cap off their impressive season? Before that curtain closing grand finale takes place, the Gandrud Performance 602 Cratetoberfest Challenge brings together all sorts of race vehicles that use a 602 crate motor. There has been a lot of great action and parity with seven different winners in the first eight runnings of the event. The winner will get to choose a fellow driver in the event to win a brand new Chevrolet 602 crate motor in the post-race drawing in Victory Lane. We will take a trip down Oktoberfest memory lane with the Upper Midwest Vintage Racing Series. You just might see a race car that competed in or even won a previous Oktoberfest main event. You might even witness a Wisconsin racing legend getting back behind the wheel once again. Gates open to begin the ‘seat saving land rush’ at 8:30, the 602 Cratetoberfest Challenge drivers run their combined practice and qualifying session starting at 10, all divisions lineup on the front straight for the on-track Autograph Session at 10:45 and the final checkered flags of 2026 will fly high beginning at 12 Noon.
